Empowering Nigeria’s Future Scientists: The GENIUS Initiative Offers Full Scholarship in Molecular Biology Training

In an inspiring fusion of philanthropy and science, the GENIUS Initiative (Genomic Education for Nurturing Innovative Undergraduate Scientists)  has been launched to equip young Nigerian undergraduates with cutting-edge skills in molecular biology.

Conceived as a charitable tribute to Tracy Okoro Isaac on her birthday, the initiative is delivered in partnership with the DNA Learning Centre Nigeria, the nation’s foremost hub for hands-on science education. The GENIUS Initiative is a 7-day, fully funded intensive training program designed to introduce students to modern molecular techniques and bioinformatics tools essential for careers in biomedical research and biotechnology.

Set within the serene learning environment of the Advanced Molecular Lab of DNA Learning Center, Godfrey Okoye University’s Ugwuomu Campus, Enugu State, the program offers participants a rare opportunity to gain real laboratory experience under the guidance of experienced molecular biologists and educators.

In line with the vision of DNALC Nigeria, this initiative is more than a training; it is an investment in the scientific future of Nigeria which also further serve as a pipeline for talented students to rise into the next generation of researchers and innovators.”

What Participants Will Learn

Selected undergraduate students will be trained in the following molecular biology techniques:

  • DNA extraction and quantification
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • DNA barcoding and sequence analysis
  • Basic bioinformatics tools
  • Introduction to molecular diagnostics

By the end of the program, participants will not only understand the principles behind these techniques but also gain the confidence to apply them in real-world research settings.

Who Is Eligible?

The scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in Nigerian tertiary institutions and studying life science disciplines such as Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology. Applicants must:

  • Be in 200 level or above
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.0 scale (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrate strong interest in molecular biology
  • Be available for the entire duration of the program
  • Submit a compelling 250-word motivation letter

Preference will be given to applicants from underserved or underrepresented backgrounds, in line with the initiative’s commitment to equity in science education.

What the Scholarship Covers

All selected candidates will receive a full scholarship that includes:

  • Tuition for the 7-day training
  • Laboratory materials and reagents
  • Daily lunch and training kits
  • A certificate of participation

How to Apply

Prospective applicants must complete th online application form and upload the following documents:

  • A recent academic transcript or result slip
  • A motivation letter (maximum 250 words)
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member (optional but encouraged)

Application Deadline: 11th June

Training Dates: 7th – 11th July 2025

Venue: DNA Learning Centre Nigeria, Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu, Enugu State.

In a country where access to advanced scientific training is often limited, the GENIUS Initiative stands out as a beacon of opportunity. It not only provides students with hands-on skills but also connects them to global standards in biotechnology and molecular diagnostics.

As Nigeria looks to build a knowledge-driven economy, initiatives like GENIUS are laying the groundwork—one scientist at a time.
