We plan and run five advanced bio-science workshops through the year for students and faculty from different tertiary and educational institutions plus other organizations in Nigeria. We host – World of DNA, DNA Science, Genome Science, DNA Barcoding of the Nigerian flora and fauna; and DNA Metabarcoding.
In addition to this, we also host workshops, conferences and seminars for public audience for awareness and science education.
In this module, you will conduct a mini ecological study using DNA barcoding to identify plants, animals, and fungi from a local habitat. Just as a unique universal product code (UPC) identifies a product in the store, a “DNA barcode” is a unique DNA sequence that identifies each living thing. DNA is extracted from biological samples and the barcode region is amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Then the PCR product is sequenced and the nucleotide sequence is analyzed using DNA Subway, a simple bioinformatics workflow developed by the DNALC. You will search the GenBank phylogenetic trees to show evolutionary relationships. Novel sequences will be published to GenBank.
DNA barcoding is especially suitable for independent student research projects, and you will see examples of many kinds of student projects from the United States. Skill sets include:
