CSHL & DNALC NY
Pioneering Genetics Education
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) form a powerful partnership dedicated to advancing genetics education. Established in 1988, the DNALC is the world’s first science center focused entirely on public genetics education, offering hands-on laboratory experiences for students and educators. CSHL, renowned for its molecular genetics research, extends its mission through the DNALC to provide comprehensive educational programs that include lab field trips, summer camps, teacher training workshops, and digital resources. Together, they empower students and families to thrive in the gene age by making sophisticated genetic concepts accessible through engaging educational activities.
The laboratory was founded by a group of scientists, including Dr. Charles B. Davenport, who aimed to study marine organisms and their biology. In its early years, CSHL focused primarily on marine biology, conducting research that contributed to the understanding of various biological processes.
DNALC New York aims to ignite a passion for science among students of all ages. The center’s mission is to provide hands-on laboratory training and inquiry-based instruction that empowers individuals to thrive in the gene age. The vision is to create a world where scientific literacy is accessible to everyone, fostering a generation of informed citizens capable of engaging with complex scientific issues.
